This wonderful mother of pearl Chinese game counter or gambling chip was probably made in the 18th century. These were used as counters in gambling games of that time in China and Europe. The fish was a good luck token in China but the fish shape fell out of favor after 1760. An intricate design is incised on both sides of the counter (both sides shown in pics), including a pseudo crest of billing doves in the roundel and tiny scales. This intricate engraving was done by master craftsmen with a burin or graver tool. This chip is a high-quality counter and in excellent condition. It measures 3-1/8 inches long x almost 1 inch tall.
