This is a Victorian ivory and gold-plated inlaid pocket purse. It measures 3-1/2 inches long x 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick. It is early Victorian, about 1860 - 1890. The hinges and latch are good and work properly. There is a shield inlaid in the middle and lovely floral design on the ends. The inlay is high-quality work and fine detail. Around the floral inlay design is a gold-plated filigree. There is one section about an inch long that has become unglued and is raised slightly. It appears that someone has tried to re-glue it. The ivory is a lighter color in this 1-inch area. The ends of the purse are slightly warped with age and do not close all the way. The center meets together well. The interior is lined with green satin. It is mostly intact on the bottom section, although torn away some at one corner, but missing on the top portion. This is an early and rare piece and, with a little repair work, would be a very valuable piece. Great item for Victorian accessory and/or ivory collectors. |
